Thinking about the “Five Solas of the Reformation,” on this eve of Reformation Sunday, I couldn’t help but also think of the reformational way Thomas Chalmers has shaped my thinking about life, grace, mercy, the Scriptures, and the beauty of the faith that the magisterial reformers bequeathed to us. It struck me that like them, Chalmers’ influence has also produced …
The Five Solas of the Reformation
The “Five Solas of the Reformation” are Latin slogans used by Protestant Reformers to summarize and proclaim the essential theological distinctives of the Biblical Gospel: Sola Scriptura, by Scripture alone. Sola Fide, by faith alone. Solus Christus, through Christ alone. Sola Gratia, by grace alone. Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone. 495 years ago in the little college town …
The “Solas” of Chalmers
Thinking about the “Five Solas of the Reformation,” on this eve of Reformation Sunday, I couldn’t help but also think of the reformational way Thomas Chalmers has shaped my thinking about life, grace, mercy, the Scriptures, and the beauty of the faith …
The Wider Diameter of Light
“The wider a man’s knowledge becomes, the deeper should be his humility; for the more he knows the more he sees of what remains unknown. The wider the diameter of light, the larger the circumference of darkness.” Thomas Chalmers “With every footstep of growing knowledge there ought to be a growing humility–that is the best guarantee both for a sound …
In This Hour
“If ever there was a crisis in our history, when courage and consistency have been more called for, it is the day on which we have now fallen, when the poison of false and hollow principle is undermining our strength from within, and thousands of our deadliest enemies from without are on the tiptoe of high expectancy for a coming …

Obama’s Judas Kiss
Instead of garnering him electoral support, President Obama’s extreme pro-abortion rhetoric and policy-making may be becoming a substantial liability. According to a recent Gallup Poll the number of Americans who self-identify as “Pro-Choice” has hit a record-low at just 41%. Meanwhile, self-identifying “Pro-Life” Americans now hold a nine-point plurality at just above 50%. So, the president’s ardent support of Planned …
Planned Parenthood’s Eugenic Agenda
After 96 years, the global abortion conglomerate Planned Parenthood is still targeting the children of minority groups for elimination–remaining true to the Eugenic ideals of its founder, Margaret Sanger, who brazenly dubbed them “Human Weeds.” Indeed, 79 percent of Planned Parenthood’s abortion clinics are located in or within walking distance of black and Hispanic communities. “Minority communities are the number …
Kingdomtide
This Sunday marks the beginning of Kingdomtide, a liturgical season generally observed by Protestants, especially Methodists and Presbyterians thanks to the ongoing influence of Martin Bucer, John Calvin, George Whitefield, and Charles Wesley. The season extends from the end of Pentecost until the beginning of Advent. Worship services during Kingdomtide stress the extension and growth of God’s great Kingdom. Inevitably, …
The Courtier’s Curses
With the news that Planned Parenthood has launched aggressive attack ads against George Allen and Mitt Romney, I immediately thought of the quip of Thomas Chalmers: “There is honor in the distinction of being disdained by the wicked and ignorant, for quoth the poet, ‘A courtier’s curses are exalted praise.’” Planned Parenthood is the world’s oldest, largest, and best-organized provider of abortion …
New Urbanism at Its Best
First, there was the remarkable High Line project in New York City, transforming an abandoned overhead rail line into an elevated park. Now, plans are underway to bring the same kind of transformation to New Orleans with the very ambitious Lafitte Corridor. These projects represent New Urbanism at its best.
Jesus “Wife” Papyrus: An Elaborate Hoax
According to a report in both the Guardian and the New American, the much-ballyhooed discovery of a supposedly ancient fragment of papyrus is in fact a fake, say multiple scholars and experts. According to the September 18 issue of the UK’s Guardian newspaper, Karen King, a professor of early Christianity at Harvard University, said the fragment is from the third …
The Pro-Abort Attack on Hobby Lobby
A coalition of pro-abortion clergy has launched a protest against Hobby Lobby for it’s commitment to life. Hobby Lobby, which operates more than 500 stores in 41 states, says providing the mandated ObamaCare coverage for “morning-after” abortion drugs violates its Christian owners’ “deeply held religious beliefs.” So, the company has sought relief in the courts. The company’s attorney, Kyle Duncan …
